New radio station in Essen: Local radios bundle forces for the region!

On March 20, 2025, the local radios in North Rhine-Westphalia are preparing for fundamental changes. The Funke Mediengruppe plans a comprehensive realignment of its radio stations in the region to secure the future of local radio. A new radio house model will be introduced from January 2024.

This initiative includes a merger of the editorial offices of Radio Mülheim, Radio Oberhausen, Radio Emscher Lippe and Radio K.W. in the group headquarters in Essen. The aim is to strengthen the cooperation of the editorial offices and to increase the range through a common program. An important element of this strategy is the creation of three new editors. This should support the existing journalists and adapt local reporting.

improved infrastructure and synergies

In addition to the personnel changes, four new studios with the latest technology are being built in the Essen media house. These modern premises are intended to ensure that the editors can continue to report on site from the local broadcast areas. In order to increase the flexibility of the teams, jobs are also used in the local editors of the West German Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ) and the Neue Ruhr Zeitung (NRZ) for outer dates.

The editor -in -chief of Radio Emscher Lippe emphasizes the importance of closeness to the listeners and the relevance of local topics. The new Funkhaus synergies offer the opportunity to optimize the topic planning and the implementation through bundled competence.
