More violence and theft in train stations: travel security at risk!

In 2024, a worrying increase in assault was recorded in German train stations. According to Radio Euskirchen , the number of bodily harm rose from January to the end of October to around 10,600 cases. This already exceeds the total number of registered bodily harm throughout 2023, which was in 10,115 cases.

In trains on the open route, 2,661 attacks were reported by the end of October, which corresponds to a similar level as in the previous year. The majority of these incidents, with 1,418 cases, did not exist on regional traffic, while 171 attacks in high -speed trains were recorded. Around 20 million travelers use the 5,700 train stations in Germany every day, where 6,000 federal police officers and 4,500 security forces from Deutsche Bahn are in use.

theft and safety precautions

Another problem is the theft of bags and hand luggage. By the end of October 2024, 10,185 thefts were registered in train stations and 10.118 in trains. This shows a slight increase compared to the previous year. A particularly large number of thefts were registered in high -speed trains (3,300) and regional traffic (3,087). In order to increase the safety of passengers, Deutsche Bahn has increased the number of video cameras in train stations to 11,000 by the end of 2024. More than 50,000 video cameras are installed in regional and S-Bahn trains, which means that over 80% of local trains are equipped with it. In addition, Deutsche Bahn invests over 200 million euros annually in security measures and sensitizes travelers through loudspeaker announcements.

In a separate survey, the Berlin transport company (BVG) reported almost 4,200 acts of violence in their buses, trains and train stations in 2023. This has been the highest value for ten years. The total number of registered crimes in the BVG area was 14,825, which is the second lowest number of the past ten years. 4,181 assault, coercion, robberies and sexual offenses were documented. In 9,252 cases, the police requested video recordings from BVG transport means, which is an increase in comparison to previous years, and supports the prevention and clarification of crimes with 6,672 cameras, such as rbb24 reported.
