Young driver is enthusiastic about trabren in Gelsenkirchen!

On February 9, 2025, the trotting racing track in Gelsenkirchen was the venue for an exciting race day, on which the native Gelsenkirchener Thomas Panschow delighted the audience with an impressive performance. The professional driver, who is currently active in Berlin, took part in four times and achieved two victories and a fourth and fifth place. His successes are all the more remarkable because he stood to win under the training of Wolfgang Nimczyk, the coaching champion from Willich, who led four of the eleven horses started.

The betting turnover of 82,752 euros at the race day, spread over eleven exams, shows the great interest in this sport. Although Kaithhlynn Star started the race from an unfavorable start number 10, Hauber was able to leave his greatest competitor Robin Bot, who went into the race with La Vie en Rose as a favorite. As a result, the 18-year-old not only secured victory, but also a prize money of 4,000 euros.

The importance of trot racing

Traben sport has a long tradition in Germany and is of cultural and economic importance. Every year there are around 1,000 horse races in this country, in which over 8,000 horses take part. These events attract up to a million spectators and create over 3,000 jobs in more than 100 professions. Best sales in the German Galop Priming now reach almost 29 million euros, whereby in 2023 it was reported of a record sales of 30,396 euros.

Despite these positive developments, there are challenges. The number of racing clubs in Germany fell to only 23 in 2023, and the breeds for the galop prison also decreased to 1,150. These trends raise questions about the future of horse racing in Germany, where the popularity of one of the oldest sports is clearly noticeable and at the same time fought for the preservation of traditions.
