New hippo in the Gelsenkirchen zoo: Rupia brings a fresh wind!

In the Zoom Erlebniswelt Gelsenkirchen focus is on the hippos and the latest roommate rupia. The three animals have recently been living in harmony. Rupia, a young female, was brought from the Copenhagen Zoo to Gelsenkirchen last year and has already integrated well into the group.

The zookeepers have observed how the Rupia socialization with Ernie and Asita is positive. First Rupia was announced with ASITA, which worked well. Now Ernie shows interest in the new, while Asita wakes up protectively over Rupia, especially when Ernie becomes too stormy. This gratifying development is eagerly persecuted by the zookeepers who are happy about the harmonious course of socialization.

new roommate Bulma

But not only rupia is new to the zoom experience world. Bulma, another hippo female, has also enriched the enclosure since August 29. Bulma comes from the Zoo d’Amnéville in France and has also successfully completed its quarantine. The merging of the three hippos was easy after Bulma was used to the transport box in advance.

curator Björn Unger personally accompanied Bulma on her trip, which ended in Gelsenkirchen after a five -hour trip on Tuesday at around 3:00 p.m. After leaving the transport box, Bulma immediately explored her new surroundings. Bulma, Ernie and Asita now live together in the ELE jungle adventure and the spacious outdoor area on Lake Africa.

insights into the life of the hippos

hippos, also known as hippopotamus, are fascinating animals. These amphibian mammals often stay in the water during the day while grazing ashore at night. You need about 50 kilograms of grass per night. Their special body features, such as high -lying nostrils, eyes and ears, help them to remain visible when staying in the water.

A particularly interesting fact is that hippos are one of the most dangerous large animals in Africa. Their temperament and their defense, especially when cows are defended with calves, are known. The cane teeth of the bulls can be up to half a meter long. Despite their chunky appearance, hippos can achieve speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour, which makes them particularly remarkable.

Awareness of the stocks of the hippos is important because hunting have decreased significantly. The name "hippo" is misleading because these animals are closer to pigs. Despite the multitude of prejudices, the danger that these animals represent for humans is also strongly shaped by myths because statistics are missing.

Pictures of the hippos are regularly shared on Facebook, and visitors to the Zoom Erlebniswelt are invited to observe the impressive behavior of the animals. This gives the opportunity to immerse yourself in the fascinating world of the hippos, while the zookeepers continue to promote the gentle integration of these unique animals in the group.
