Hagen von Tronje: The true hero in the Nibelungenlied? New film adaptation unveiled!

In the world of film adaptations of classic literature there is a new highlight: "Hagen - in the valley of the Nibelungen", which was recently published by Constantin / Highlight Communications. Ruled by Cyrill Boss and Phillipp Stennert, the film is based on the novel of the renowned fantasy author Wolfgang Hohlbein , which already in 1986 a new interpretation of the Nibelungenlieds under the title "Hagen of Tronje ”. This latest adaptation focuses on the main antagonist Hagen von Tronje, who is notorious for the murder of Siegfried von Xanten.

The Nibelungenlied is considered the largest German heroic saga and has produced numerous film and literary adaptations over the years, including the known version of Fritz Lang from 1924. The current film version aims to offer fresh perspectives on the known story and now appears both on Blu-ray disc and UHD. Sales partner is Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

A new look at Siegfried

Interestingly, the figure of Siegfried in the new film is not portrayed as the radiant hero that many know from tradition. Instead, the film shows this character as undisciplined, self -centered and little heroic. Hohlbein criticizes this representation and describes Siegfried, who is traditionally considered a German national hero, as Rüpel. This represents a remarkable break with the usual heroic reading of the Nibelungen saga.

The film's premiere is imminent, on Thursday the viewer will immerse themselves in the dramatic world of the Nibelungenlied. The original story gives Hagen a complex role; Hohlbein sees him as the real hero, more positive in his values than many would see it. This becomes particularly relevant in view of the controversial interpretations of the Nibelungenlied in the course of history, such as the use by the Nazis or Friedrich Engels' description of Siegfried as rebels.

bonus content and expectations

On the technical side, the Blu-ray of the film offers a wealth of bonus material. In this way, fans can look forward to two making-of-features that give deeper insights into the creation of the film. These include film clips, interviews and Behind-the scenes material as well as impressive special effects comparisons. The expectations are high that this special content meets the prestige of the project.

In the film itself, the event of the legendary Nibelung treasure, an element that fascinated generations of treasury in the 1970s, was not treated. Instead, the first part of the film will complete Siegfried's death. Hohlbein himself is working on a continuation of his novel, in which the treasure is supposed to play a central role and may further deepen the topic.

The Nibelungen saga has a strong cultural heritage, particularly initiated by the three most important manuscripts, which have been part of the UNESCO World Document inheritance since 2009. The historical anchoring of the Burgundy, which settled in Worms around 406/407 AD, and the destruction of their empire by Romans and Huns are reflected in the story and create an exciting background for this new film implementation.
