Triathlon hero despite injury: Nieberg fights through the Ironman race!

Last Saturday, March 18, 2025, the first competition team of TV Werne 03 Wasserfreunde e.V. took part in the International Hagen Swimming Festival 2025 of SV Westphalia Hagen. Trainer Werner Burczyk led the talents in the long train of the Westphalia pool to outstanding performances. Athletes of the association showed their competition strength in various disciplines and age groups.

The competition started with the lead over 50 meters butterfly. Paige Bökenkamp, born in 2005, reached ninth place with a time of 0: 32.48 minutes. In the final, she increased significantly and finished fifth with 0: 31.67 minutes. The athletes also performed considerable performance in the following competitions.

successful placements

In competition over 100 meters freestyle, Jule Kamer (born in 2009) secured the silver medal with a time of 1: 14.10 minutes. In the subsequent race over 50 meters of chest, Paige Bökenkamp once again demonstrated her combination power and reached third place, while her club colleague Jule Kamer took fifth place.

Another highlight of the competition was the 200 meter lay competition, where Jule Kamer won gold and Paige Bökenkamp took fourth place. Both swimmers achieved new personal bests.

The 100 meters of back were dominated by Leonie Volle, who won gold in her year. Luisa Hüttemann followed her with a bronze placement. In the last competition of over 400 meters freestyle, Frida Hüttemann (born 2011) fought the bronze medal with 5: 50.10 minutes, while Leonie and Luisa Hüttemann ended the race in places.

misfortunes and challenges

The competition team was accompanied by the judges Dirk Bökenkamp and Iris Knüver, who provided valuable support. The best times and placements shown are proof of the continuous training and the dedication that the athletes have invested in their preparation.

The triathlete Sebastian Nieberg from Werne also caused a sensation away from swimming. After his successful qualification for the Ironman World Cup in Hawaii on June 2, 2023 in Hamburg, he started frustrated on October 26, but motivated, despite his injuries. Because of a fall before the competition, in which he broke the metabolism, Nieberg could not be discouraged.

His preparation for competition included a test swimming in the ocean and participation in the traditional Underpants Run, which he could only partially enjoy. On race day he swam 3.86 kilometers in 1 hour and 14 minutes, despite the pain. His total time of 10 hours and 26 minutes at the Ironman not only reflects his sporting performance, but also his mental strength.

The competitions and success of these athletes impressively show how important both technical and psychological preparation in sport is. The fighting spirit and the determination of both athletes, be it in swimming or triathlon, inspire many and illustrate the challenges to be mastered in competitive sports.
