Gas change in Hamm: 38,000 households affected - this is how you react!

From next Monday, April 20, 2025, the gas supply will be changed in Hamm. The changeover of L-gas to H-gas affects both private households and industry and is said to affect around 38,000 households in the urban area. According to Wa.de the information post on the gas educators begins from Monday. Energie- und Wasserversorgung Hamm GmbH plans to record all gas burners in the city area and, if necessary, to convert or replace.

h gas, which mainly comes from Norway, has a higher calorific value compared to the L-gas, which is becoming increasingly rare. The changeover is not without challenges: Some older gas devices that are up to 25 years old require adjustments that are free of charge for the owner. However, it could be necessary to exchange them at your own expense.

Details for the changeover

To support the changeover, an external “gas office” is set up, which includes 40 installers and a call center. This office will be housed in the Hamtec on Münsterstrasse. The survey phase for identifying the burner systems starts in September 2025 and is expected to be completed by October 2026. The adjustment work is planned by 2027, since the changeover takes place in three sections:

  • District I: Rhynern, Uentrop, Pelkum, Herringen - Shift date April 20, 2027
  • District II: City Mitte and Heessen - Shift date of June 1, 2026
  • District III: Bockum-Hövels-Switching date July 13, 2027

The costs for gas customers remain unchanged, although H-gas has a higher calorific value and therefore less fuel is required for the same heating output. Interestingly, the price per kilogram of gas at CNG petrol stations will also increase after the changeover, since H-gas provides more energy per kilogram, but vehicles that are filled with LNG are not affected by this changeover, such as the Federal Network Agency explained.

more information and support

The Federal Network Agency has also described a detailed process that divides the change into three steps: survey, adaptation and quality control. Households affected by the changeover will be notified at least two years in advance to ensure a smooth transition. Affected consumers will find the network operator's contact information on their gas bill. Necessary adjustments to gas devices are usually borne by the network operator, so that there are no costs for households.

In order to do justice to our environment, the city of Hamm also plans a comprehensive renovation of the Hellweg for around 3.6 million euros, which is intended to improve the conditions for cyclists and pedestrians.

The gas office is available for further information and support. Citizens who have questions about the changeover can contact this office at any time.
