Hamm on the way to the 15-minute city: does the change come?

The innovative concept of the "15-minute city" is actively pursued in the city of Hamm. According to current information, 31% of the residents can reach medical practices, bus stops, daycare centers, grocery stores and schools within a radius of 15 minutes. This concept was originally developed by the Parisian scientist Carlos Moreno and aims to ensure that all essential things of everyday needs can be reached on foot or 5 minutes by bike within 15 minutes.

The model is implemented in Hamm as part of the MOTENPLAN CASE HATERPLAN, but is considered a suggestion and not as a binding requirement. Dowed quarters in Hamm, which correspond to the ideal of the 15-minute city, include the city, especially the train station district, as well as the town centers of Bockum-Hövel, Heessen and Herringen.

Availability in everyday life

The accessibility of food markets in Hamm is particularly high: 67.5% of the population can reach a business within 10 minutes on foot, while 91% are there within 15 minutes. The average walking time for a grocery store is 9 minutes and 18 seconds, and almost 98% of the citizens can do business within 10 minutes by bike.

The next family doctor or dental practice can be reached on average in 10 to 12 minutes on foot. 60% of the population make the way in less than 10 minutes. Pediatric practices can be reached on average in just under 22 minutes. In addition, 96.5% of the residents live to the next daycare center within 15 walking minutes, while 75% of the nearest primary school will reach the same time. With the bike, only 1.5% of the population needs more than 10 minutes.

The next bus stop is only 3 minutes and 20 seconds away, but the next train station is more than 40 minutes away. This data is based on an analysis from 2023 and include food markets, postal filials, pharmacies, schools, daycare centers as well as doctor and dental practices and stops.

The implementation of the concept of the 15-minute city aims to improve the quality of life in large cities by shorter paths and reduce road traffic by being necessary. Additional information shows that Paris has already started implementing this concept under Mayor Anne Hidalgo. The concept follows four leitmotifs: ecology, closeness, social life and participation. The measures in Paris include the appointment of a deputy mayor for the 15-minute city, numerous new cycle paths and the conversion of parking spaces into leisure areas, such as der VCD reported.
