Selenskyj bends: Will the dispute with Trump lead to peace?

The Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj expressed his regret about the diplomatic conflict with former US President Donald Trump. In a current statement, Selenskyj described the argument as unhappy and emphasized his willingness to work on a quick termination of the war under Trump's "strong leadership". In this context, he explained that he was ready to sign a raw material agreement at any time and in any form. He also commented on his concern that the United States has hired military aid for Ukraine, which became known the evening before his statements. This support was particularly available in the form of weapons and ammunition worth over one billion US dollars and is crucial for the defense of Ukraine against the Russian invasion. [Lippewelle] reports that the elimination of this help could lead to setbacks on the front and loss of further areas.

The dispute in the White House developed according to a word battle between Selenskyj, Trump and US Vice President J.D. Vance. During the coming together, Selenskyj von Trump and Vance were accused of ungratefulness and lack of respect. As a result, the meeting was demolished prematurely. European heads of government showed solidarity with Selenskyj and expressed their support for Ukraine. Despite the tense situation, Selenskyj refused to apologize for the incident. He continues to call for security guarantees, but no longer believes them for peace negotiations. [Nwzonline] emphasizes that Trump has withdrawn military aid to Ukraine for the time being and immediately came into force.

diplomatic initiatives and resistance

In his efforts,

Selenskyj takes up an initiative by France's President Emmanuel Macron, which suggests partial arms in the air and sea. At the sidelines of the diplomatic tensions, it is important to mention that the Ukrainian president has declared that a peace deal is currently still a long way off. Trump, in turn, emphasizes that support from the United States is only resumed if Ukraine is seriously striving for peace negotiations with Russia. This is done in a context in which Russia continues his attacks in Ukraine, while Russian President Vladimir Putin claims to be open to diplomatic negotiations. [ZDF] indicates that the Russian claims aim at capitulation of Kiev and on the waiver of territory and do not offer security guarantees.

Selenskyj criticized Trump and accused him of having taken over Russian propaganda. Despite the tensions, it remains optimistic about the Ukrainian goal of achieving peace. He also pointed out that Ukraine could fight for about half a year according to the existing arms deliveries. However, the absence of complete support from the USA could severely hinder the Ukrainian forces. Trump, on the other hand, pushes responsibility for the current conflict of Selenskyj and blames him for the ongoing war since the Russian attack in February 2022.

The Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskow sees the new delivery stop as a step to force Kiev to peace and thus further questions the dynamics of diplomatic conversations. These conversations are currently largely focused on humanitarian questions and have so far hardly made any significant progress.
