number of bathing deaths in Germany

In 2024, a total of 411 people drowned in Germany, including 14 children up to ten years. This is an alarming increase that caused the DLRG to be a warning, especially for parents: WDR reports that most of the bathing decotes in rivers and lakes can be recorded with 138. 132 cases, while twelve people lost their lives in swimming pools. These statistics are part of a worrying development that has been determined for several years.

The German Life Rettungs Society (DLRG) found a significant increase in the drowned in 2023. Compared to 2022, 31 deaths were recorded, and for the first time since 2019, the number of victims has again passed the 400 mark. DLRG President Ute Vogt emphasized the need to sensitize people to the upcoming warm months. In this context, the organization plans to point out potential dangers in the water.

It is particularly noticeable that half of the deadly bathroom accidents passed during the summer months of June, July and August. The DLRG statistics also show that more men drown than women, with 311 male and 90 female bathing deaths facing. Children and adolescents also make up a worrying part of the total number, since 28 out of a total of 411 bathing deaths fall into this age group.

The DLRG points out that older people should pay particular attention to taking a cool bath in hot weather, as this can be stressful. This knowledge also extends to younger people who already have previous illnesses. The dramatic incidents in swimming pools and waters are therefore a serious warning signal for all bathers.

These tragic events illustrate the need for increased vigilance and education about the dangers in the water, regardless of age or state of health.
