Foreclosure of the air -raid shelter: ghosts from the war awakening!
On February 21, 2025, there was an extraordinary opportunity when an air -raid shelter from the Second World War was advertised in Hamm to auction. The bunker, located on Posener Straße 1, covers a total area of 915 square meters and has been known as an air -raid shelter no. 5 since 1941. It was originally intended to protect the population during air strikes, but experienced tragic events, including a mass panic on October 25, 1944, in which several people died.
The starting bid for the auction was a symbolic euro. However, it turned out that the condition of the bunker is anything but inviting. He has been empty for years and suffers from serious maintenance problems. Experts estimate the costs of renovating several hundred thousand euros, while the demolition costs are estimated at over 600,000 euros. These high costs raise the question of whether economic use of the property is possible at all. An expert confirmed that the use of the bunker was not profitable and described the state as neglected with a clear maintenance backlog
auction without surcharge
At the auction, over 100 interested and onlookers were present. Despite the lively interest, the owners who got into the proceedings due to unpaid property taxes were not awarded. A Saxon company had given the highest offer with a bid of 117,000 euros, but was ultimately unsuccessful. The surcharge was refused for "formal reasons" because the bid was given by a society and not by a private individual, the court spokeswoman Nina Schraml said.
Rudolf Brauner from McKinley AG, who also took part in the auction, presented a rental agreement for the bunker and paid the outstanding taxes directly on site. Nevertheless, the joy of the supposed surcharge was short -lived because the court decided to announce the contract with a delay. After all, serious bidders lost patience, and the second highest bid could not be taken into account under procedural law. The participants now have the opportunity to appeal to this decision within two weeks.
The future of the bunker
The city of Hamm is now faced with the decision as to whether the foreclosure procedure will continue. Whether a new appointment will be scheduled depends on the settlement of all arrears. The perspective for the historical bunker remains tense; It is located between houses, is often used as a storage space for cars and has long since lost its original, protective potential. Despite the possibility that similar air -raid protection bunkers have been converted in the past, the future handling of this bunker is more than uncertain.
The city of Hamm wants to get rid of the unloved inheritance as quickly as possible and therefore approved the foreclosure. The auction was initiated by the Hamm District Court after the owners fell behind with their payments. Wa.de reports that ... has, but also has a moving story, is left to an uncertain fate.
The bunker illustrated the problems in dealing with the past and the challenges associated with the preservation of such historical sites. While the city hopes for a solution, the air-raid shelter will continue to be seen as a relic of a different time, the future of which remains uncertain. Another, similarly received bunker in Hamm is also involved in an unfaithful process, but there is no confirmation that it is connected to the bunker on Posener Strasse in any way. Wa.de informs about it.
