Nationwide traffic counts 2025 starts - what that means for us!
On May 5, 2025, a comprehensive nationwide road traffic count starts in Germany. This collects data on traffic development and enables the precise recording of traffic on federal, state and district roads. This is intended to promote future traffic forecasts and planning of road construction projects and the basis for the so -called "noise mapping". This project will be coordinated by the Federal Agency for Road and Transport (BAST) in Bergisch Gladbach and over 57 counting points in the Heinsberg district in the coming weeks, as Kreis-heinsberg.de
The counts are made on a total of six counts, which are scheduled between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. From May 15, these will be carried out at the selected counting points. The recording includes numerous vehicle categories, including bicycles, motorized two -wheelers, passenger cars, power buses, trucks and load trains. Particularly important places that have more than 7,000 vehicles per day are also sampled on two Fridays in the morning between 07:00 and 9:00 a.m.
scope and use of the traffic data
according to bast.de are set up about 40,000 counting points nationwide in order to record the comprehensive traffic data. These counting points are mainly set up on federal roads and highways, where the counts are monitored by corresponding road construction administrations and the federal government. This comprehensive survey takes place every five years and is decisive for future traffic planning in Germany.
The current road traffic counting (SVZ) is not only used for official traffic forecasts, but also incorporated into their analyzes by offices, research institutions, associations and citizens' initiatives. It is planned to publish the results of this year's count in autumn 2026.
technical innovations and data protection
An important feature of the SVZ 2025 is the increased use of video surveillance that offers shared automated evaluation options. Data protection is very important: vehicle license plates are not recorded and video recordings are deleted after the analysis. In addition, permanent counting points are continuously anonymous traffic data that are indispensable for more precise analyzes of the traffic situation.
On the underpinning of the transport infrastructure, the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV) publishes the standard work "Transport in Numbers" annually. This comprehensive data collection includes statistical information on mobility, accident figures, emissions and traffic volume and is processed by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW). Interested parties can download the current issue of the work in PDF format free of charge or move into the print edition via the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), such as bmdv.bund.de
