Radroute West: This improves bicycle connection in Erkelenz!

On May 6, 2025, the Committee on Urban Development, Economy, Transport and Digitization in Erkelenz met. At the center of the session was the west cycling route and the planned quick cycle connection between Heinsberg, Hückelhoven, Erkelenz and Mönchengladbach. These measures are part of a comprehensive concept that was decided in September 2022 and aims to create a continuous bicycle route network in the city.

The west cycling route, which extends over 2.5 kilometers, begins on the edge of Matzerath and ends in the city center of Erkelenz. It leads through the Oerather Mühlenfeld, crosses important traffic arteries such as the Viersener and the Xantener Allee and ends in the city center. According to Heinsberg magazine , the planning office Squadra + was commissioned with the detailed elaboration of this important connection. Additional measures should ensure that cycling in this region becomes faster, safer and more comfortable.

Citizen participation and feedback

From February to March 2025, a citizen participation for the West Radroute took place. Residents and interested citizens were informed by handouts and were able to comment online and at an information event in the town hall. During this phase, 38 people gave feedback online, and around 40 interested parties took part in the event. The majority of the participants were positive about the planning, while some negative or neutral opinions were expressed. All feedback was checked by the administration for their implementability.

Special attention was paid to a section over the school ring, to which alternative suggestions were brought in. The working group for foot and cycling was included in this process. The committee discussed the results of the citizen participation and the various sections of the West Radroute and commissioned the administration to use the design planning for the funding application.

preliminary remarks for further projects

In addition to the west cycling route, the administration presented a feasibility study to the fast -bike connection between Heinsberg, Hückelhoven, Erkelenz and Mönchengladbach during the session. The preferred variant leads across the street "Am Fast", with alternative routes being considered via Tenholter Straße. Although the preferred variant was viewed critically by the members of the committee, the project received the support of the committee, which spoke out for the necessary planning steps.

These developments are part of a larger plan to strengthen cycling in the region. An example of this could be the current trend in North Rhine-Westphalia, which shows that municipalities such as Wettringen make significant progress in the field of cycling. There, more than 4 million euros have been invested in the expansion of the cycling infrastructure in recent years, which makes it clear that there is also the potential for a similar development in Erkelenz to increase cycling satisfaction and make traffic safer, such as Tagesschau reported.
