Winter burglary: Snow chaos and black ice ensure traffic disorders!
On Wednesday evening, January 8, 2025, the Aachen city region is recorded by a cold front that is characterized by a complex limit of the border. Snowfalls spread throughout the region, while in the Eifel the precipitation in the rain and rain of black ice changes around midnight. In the northern parts of the city region, however, it remains mostly wintry with continuing snowfall. This weather phenomenon is caused by the low pressure area Charlie, which combines mild air flows from Brittany with dry, cold air from the polar latitudes. Temperature differences of up to 9 degrees can be expected within just 50 kilometers.
The Charlie's low pressure area will continue on Thursday morning, and cold air masses will take over the weather. In the morning, snowfalls are observed throughout the area that pass into snow showers and occasional sunshine in the afternoon. In Monschau, Hürtgenwald and Hohen Venn, snow depths of 10 to 20 centimeters are predicted, while the temperatures in the region between minus 1 and plus 1 degree, fluctuate up to 2 degrees in the northern city region.
winter service and traffic situation
With the strong snowfall, winter service also becomes active. Street North Rhine -Westphalia has prepared for the winter road conditions. In Simmerath, 11 clearing and stray vehicles are ready for use, while 6 vehicles are available in Aachen. The measures focus on heavily frequented roads and escape routes, such as the B258, B266 and B399. The vehicles are equipped with clearing shovels and dispatchers, whereby only salt or brine is used. Sand and grit are not used.
The master's Simmerath has a capacity of 1775 tons of salt and 60,000 liters of Sole for the upcoming missions, while the Aachen Meisteri provides 500 tons of salt and 50,000 liters of brine. On snow -rich days, between 150 and 170 tons of salt are used in Simmerath, in Aachen there are 20 to 30 tons.
nationwide problems due to black ice
These winter conditions result in numerous traffic accidents and delays in flight and rail traffic. At the Frankfurt Airport, 120 out of 1,090 planned starts and landings failed, while 35 flights were canceled as a precaution in Munich. There were also disturbances at BER Airport, with around 20 unusual flights and limited landings of 20 per hour. In addition, the smooth lanes have led to numerous accidents. In Freiburg, for example, 20 traffic accidents were registered. Critical situations particularly smoked in Rhineland-Palatinate, where 17 accidents were documented.
The expectations for the coming Monday indicate milder temperatures, but there is a risk of black ice. The weather situation will generally be shaped by storm and changeable precipitation, with temperatures that can fluctuate between -2 and +9 degrees.
