German handball players fight for a draw: drama against Switzerland!

On May 7, 2025, the German national handball team managed to achieve an exciting 32:32 draw against Switzerland in the European Championship qualification. This result secured the group victory for the Germans and at the same time marked the first defeat in the European Championship qualification in ten years. The last loss dates from May 3, 2015, when the team defeated Spain with 20:26. With the past game, the German team now has an impressive series of 25 unbeaten games in continental excretion.

The game took place in the Hallenstadion of Zurich in front of 8,354 spectators. Germany had a missed start and scored only one goal in the first ten minutes. So they quickly lay 1: 5 behind, which the team presented with great challenges. The two rejected seven meters of Marko Grgic and Tim Freihöfer also burdened the team. Nevertheless, thanks to Andreas Wolff's strong performance, the German team managed to find their way back into play, who showed several glossy parades.

exciting final phase and catch -up

After a weak first half, in which Germany left 11:14, the team showed a combative face in the second round. Eight minutes before the end, they were even back with four goals before the players around captain Johannes Golla fought back. Juri Knorr, who was the best throwers on the German side with a total of six goals, achieved the decisive balance. His seven-meter in the last second ensured the 32:32 final score and underlined the determination of the German team, which had already qualified for the European Championship 2026 before the game.

In the further course of the game, young talents such as Mathis Häseler, who celebrated his international debut and scored four goals, as well as Luca Witzke with five goals, also showed promising approaches. However, Bundesliga trainer Alfred Gislason showed himself dissatisfied with the performance of his team, especially with regard to the numerous technical errors. In the first half, it was eight of such mistakes alone, which required a quick reaction that caused the coach to take a break early.

outlook for the next challenge

The next game of the DHB selection will take place on Sunday in Stuttgart against Turkey. Another success could influence the important seed list for the upcoming European Championship draw on May 15 in Herning, Denmark. After the increase in performance in the final phase against Switzerland, the players hope to be able to take this swing with them in order to show a competitive performance against Turkey.

Germany now leads the group 8: 2 points, followed by Switzerland and Austria, each with 6: 4 points. The team is not only on the right track, but also shows that it can assert itself despite setbacks and challenges. The enthusiasm and the fighting spirit that became visible in the game against Switzerland offer a glimmer of hope for the upcoming games and the upcoming challenges in the EM 2026.
