Youth unemployment in Herne: urgent need for action required!

The Alliance for Work came together in the WEWOLE FORUM in Herne on April 9, 2025 to discuss current developments on the labor market and challenges in the region. A new all -time high was reached with a remarkable increase in employment in Herne, which rose from 50,415 employees in March 2024 in September 2024. However, this positive signal was overshadowed by the problem of youth unemployment, the Mayor Dr. Frank Dudda brought up. The unemployment rate among young people between the ages of 15 and 25 is 10.8 percent.

As part of the session, Raphael Karrasch from Joblinge Gag Ruhr presented various programs to support young people. According to current figures, over 620,000 nets (not in education, employer or training) live in the age group from 15 to 24 years in 2023. Karrasch emphasized that the approaches such as inspiration through social media, excessive work and direct address are decisive in order to convey these young people in training positions. The success rate for the city of Essen, which is 80 percent.

Analysis of the labor market

The Herne Employment Agency, represented by Sebastian Brimberg, presented a comprehensive analysis of the labor market. Here he found that the top industry in Herne represent healthcare, trade as well as home and social affairs, which together make up 37.3 percent of the employees subject to social security contributions. Another critical point was the long -term unemployment rate, which is 38.9 percent in Herne. This number is more gratifying compared to the Ruhr area region.

In another context, employment subject to social security contributions is an essential topic in German social security law. It is defined as non -self -employed work, especially in the context of an employment relationship. Employees are obliged to pay social security contributions, which in return ensures social security benefits. In order to gain clarity about individual employment status, the status assessment procedure according to § 7a SGB IV is available, which enables precise classification in the respective categories.

In addition, it is pointed out that employment also remains during the use of a value credit, such as sabbaticals or long -term accounts. This regulation allows employees to take a break, for example to gain further training, child rearing or maintaining relatives.

Ultimately, the exchange in the Alliance for Work is of crucial importance in order to find solutions for the pressing questions on the labor market. The data and analyzes presented show that despite positive developments, there are still major challenges, especially with regard to youth employment.
