Payments to asylum seekers: How much do you really get?

On May 3, 2025, an important discussion group took place in Herne, in which numerous older participants discussed the situation of asylum seekers. Various topics were addressed in the round, including the question of child benefit and financial payments to asylum seekers. Participation in the conversation was characterized by excitement and sometimes negative emotions.

A participant expressed her displeasure with immediate payments to asylum seekers and asked the question in the room why this was dealt with in this way. During the discussion it was made clear that asylum seekers are not entitled to child benefit during the asylum procedure. This was underpinned by a reference to the current legal regulations that were initated by the old parties.

The legal framework for payments to asylum seekers are regulated in the Asylum Seekers' Performance Act. According to the Federal Law Gazette (Federal Law Gazette 2024 I No. 325), the new performance rates for 2025 were published on October 29, 2024. These contain amounts that are divided into different needs levels in order to cover the necessary and personal needs of asylum seekers.

category necessary need (€) necessary personal needs (€) total (€)

The discussion participants partly remembered their own experiences during the Second World War when they themselves were refugees. These memories may have influenced their emotional reactions on the topic of asylum seekers. It was emphasized that the asylum seekers are ultimately people who ask for protection and a new life.

The topics and statements mentioned reflect a deeply seated concern about the distribution of resources in times of economic uncertainties. The figures and information on the services according to the BMAS illustrate the structural conditions with which asylum seekers are faced with, and offer an important context for discussion in Herne. The discussion group is an example of how these questions can continue to split society and illustrates the need for open dialogue about integration and support in an increasingly diversified society.

The → Lokalkompass.de extensively reported on the event and the discussions they had in many different perspectives on the subject of asylum and social justice.
