Traffic accidents in Swabia: Number of injured drops, drug trips rise!

In the past few months, alarming trends in road traffic have been shown in Germany and especially in Bavaria. The police have increasingly pointed out the dangers of drugs at the wheel, while new statistics on traffic accidents were released.

Current reports from Blickpunkt Arnsberg According to the influence of drugs in Arnsberg were stopped in Arnsberg. These controls are part of a nationwide initiative to increase the security in road traffic and to increasingly attract the topic of drug use in connection with driving.

traffic accident statistics 2024

The police headquarters in Schwaben Nord published the traffic accident statistics for 2024. This shows a positive development in relation to the entire number of traffic accidents. Compared to the previous year, the number dropped by 1.8 % to 26,177 accidents, while the number of injured people also slightly returned to 4.233 ( Police Bavaria ).

However, not everything is positive: the number of seriously injured people rose to 503, which represents the second highest value in the past ten years. Tragically, 32 people died in traffic accidents, four more than in the previous year. It is particularly striking that the number of people killed with a car has doubled: 16 in 2024 compared to 8 in 2023.

Another concern of worrying is the increase in drug drives, which has increased by 65 % compared to the previous year, with 805 registered cases. Despite this increase, the number of accidents with drug participation remained largely stable at 54. This shows that the police are still facing the challenge of effectively pulling drivers out of circulation under the influence of drugs.

drugs at the wheel: a growing problem

A dark field study by the Board of Trustees (KFV) from Austria points out that around 250,000 people led a vehicle under drug influence in 2023. However, only 8,676 advertisements were reimbursed for drug drugs, which only corresponds to about 3 % of the estimated cases. This underlines how important it is to implement suitable devices and processes for the effective detection and control of drug drivers ( kfv ).

The police urge the public to take drugs and drive seriously and to draw attention to the dangers. This call is all the more urgent in view of the increase in drug trips and the associated risks. There is further focus on the increasing accidents with pedelecs and e-scooters, which have had an increase in the injured and dead since 2023.

In summary, it is crucial that both the authorities and the public actively work on solutions to ensure safety in road traffic. The increasing numbers show that there is still a lot to do to combat drugs at the wheel and prevent accidents.
