On April 9, 2025, the district police authority Olpe carried out an extensive control day under the leadership of the traffic management. From 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., checkpoints were set up at various locations in all municipalities in the district. The focus of the mission was on combating main causes of accidents and property crime. Over 20 officials from various areas of the police authority were on the use of the day.

The results of this campaign were significant and outline the challenge of making road traffic more secure: a total of 8 criminal complaints were written, including 5 due to violations of the compulsory insurance law. There were also 3 advertisements for driving under the influence of narcotics, which indicates a continuing problem in road traffic. In addition, 170 speed violations and 25 other administrative offenses were reported. Chief Police Commissioner Stephan Stracke expressed mixed feelings about the results, but sees the need to increase the control pressure through similar actions in the future to improve traffic safety in a circle.

As part of the Europe -wide "Roadpol" campaign, which is also supported by other police authorities such as the Höxter district police authority, another control day was carried out. Here, 138 speed violations were found nationwide without a traffic accident with personal injury that day. Within closed towns, the fastest road user reached a speed of 84 km/h. Outside of closed towns, a top value of 112 km/h was registered in a speed 70 area on the B64 near Bad Driburg.

The circular control in Höxter focused on areas outside of closed towns due to higher speeds and serious consequences of accidents. Here, there were also violations of the use of mobile phones during driving and technical defects in vehicles.

The context of traffic safety in Germany

The pressure on traffic safety in Germany grows. The road network is denser and more densely used, which increases the likelihood of traffic accidents. In 2021, 2,569 people were killed in road traffic in Germany, while over 327,550 injuries were recorded. These alarming numbers have made accident prevention a central topic for political and security institutions. The statutory accident insurance is commissioned to actively prevent work and path accidents.

Delivery in the number of accidents during Corona pandemic in 2019 and 2020 could only be stabilized temporarily. Prevention measures and training courses in traffic safety play a crucial role; They are organized by various organizations, including the professional associations and accident funds, in cooperation with the German Road Safety Council (DVR). Specific prevention actions, such as traffic safety training, should help, in particular to raise awareness of the dangers in road traffic.

Through joint programs that aim to improve traffic safety, not only is the safety in road traffic promoted, but also a sensitization in schools and kindergartens is initiated. These measures are part of a process that has been ongoing for decades that aims to increase security for all road users.
