The Tiergarten Kleve can look forward to a very special event: for the first time in its 66-year history, a tree steampier was born. On April 9, 2025, the female Birgit gave birth to her first young animal, which now explores the outdoor area. Tiergarten director Martin Polotzek confirmed that the young animal is a female named Becki. Visitors have the opportunity to watch the curious animal every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Birgit takes great care of Becki, who was born in a protected interior. Father Bruce is also present and accompanies the two. Becki will begin to eat solid food in the coming days. The North American tree steamers, also known as Urson or tree tingling pig, are located in the forests of North America. With over 30,000 spines, which are covered, they have an effective defense mechanism against their natural enemies, which include pumas, black bears and coyotes. They fully grow between six and eleven kilograms and are purely vegetarian.
The birth of Becki is a reason to celebrate because the zoo has been home to tree stachler since 2022. They live together with stabs in a facility referred to as "North America WG".
