The first birth of a tree steam boy in the Kleve zoo!

The Tiergarten Kleve can look forward to a very special event: for the first time in its 66-year history, a tree steampier was born. On April 9, 2025, the female Birgit gave birth to her first young animal, which now explores the outdoor area. Tiergarten director Martin Polotzek confirmed that the young animal is a female named Becki. Visitors have the opportunity to watch the curious animal every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Birgit takes great care of Becki, who was born in a protected interior. Father Bruce is also present and accompanies the two. Becki will begin to eat solid food in the coming days. This birth is not only a premiere for the zoo, but also marks an important step in the breeding of this impressive species.

peculiarities of the Baumstachler

The North American tree steamers, also known as Urson or tree tingling pig, are located in the forests of North America. With over 30,000 spines, which are covered, they have an effective defense mechanism against their natural enemies, which include pumas, black bears and coyotes. They fully grow between six and eleven kilograms and are purely vegetarian.

The birth of Becki is a reason to celebrate because the zoo has been home to tree stachler since 2022. They live together with stabs in a facility referred to as "North America WG". In Kleve, the coexistence of the two animal species is part of a larger topic that indicates the diversity of North America.

plans for the future

In view of the successful birth, the Tiergarten plans to expand its facility for tree stachlers and stabbits. Martin Polotzek reports on future plans to integrate a new topic "North America". In order to implement the project, the Tiergarten collects donations for the construction of the new facilities. Bruce, which currently lives in the rear area of the zoo, is significantly involved and is not yet visible to the guests. Donations can be submitted under the keyword "Bruce + name and address of the donor".

The planned new system for Bruce and the stabbing should enable visitors to experience and understand the animals in more detail. As soon as enough donations have been collected, Bruce is accommodated in the northernmost part of the zoo and prepared to give visitors a trusting impression of its kind.

Overall, the Kleve zoo not only offers exciting insights into the world of the tree stachlers, but there are also many other young animals to admire. These include prairie dogs, meerkats, alpacas, dwarfs, dwarf goats, Jakobschaffe and Bulgarian goats. If you are interested in the wildlife, you will find a variety of attractions in the Klever Tiergarten, including an adventure playground and a new walk -in prairy dog.
