Uedem looks optimistic about 2025: Discover opportunities and challenges!

On January 1, 2025, Rainer Weber, Mayor of Uedem, looks at the challenges of the past year and gives a outlook on the new year. In 2024, the municipality was faced with world and federal political challenges, in particular through the Ukraine war and conflicts in the Middle East. The accommodation of refugees remains a central topic, since around 285 refugees are currently accommodated in 38 accommodations.

In 2024 there were 98 new allocations of refugees, including a former Edeka market was converted into accommodation. Despite these challenges, there was an overall positive economic situation in Uedem, with trade tax revenue of 8.2 million euros, which corresponds to an increase of 0.4 million euros compared to 2023. The budget deficit for 2024 is estimated at around 0.5 million euros, with forecast deficits of around 2.0 million euros by 2028.

Further investments in the infrastructure are planned for 2025, including the expansion of the way to school and the renewal of the canal.

An important topic remains the provision of inexpensive living space in Uedem, Keppeln and Uedemerbruch. In addition, the implementation of the surface drainage concept in Keppeln started in early 2025. The climate protection concept was adopted in 2024, while mobility concept and municipal heat planning are in prospect for 2025. Weber thanked the volunteers in the community, especially the Uedem youth orchestra, which received the home prize in 2024. The mayor is optimistic about 2025 and emphasizes that challenges are considered as opportunities for the further development of the community.

For further support for the integration of refugees, European funding is provided that are awarded through the federal and state governments, such as the asylum, migration and integration fund (AMIF) and the European Social Fund (ESF) Plus. These programs are designed to promote the integration of third -country nationals and to support measures to improve the life situation of disadvantaged groups.
