The thematic connection between Stravinsky's work and the musical performance is remarkable. "The story of the soldier" tells of the sale of the soul to the devil, whereby various styles of music such as march, tango, waltz and ragtime are integrated to underline the dramatic elements of history. This information comes from a previous concert in the memorial and Museum Trutzhain, where the piece was also listed. Gerald Friese brought a special depth into the performance due to his scenic reading.
Igor Stravinsky, born on June 5, 1882 in Oranienbaum near St. Petersburg, is one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. His important works such as "Feuervogel" and "Le Sacre du Printemps" made him known. Even if his “The History of Soldiers” is more in the shadow of his other works, it is an essential piece that shows the interweaving of music and language masterfully. Stravinsky also often worked as a pianist and conductor of his own pieces and left an extensive work until his death on April 6, 1971 in New York.
