New rock garden on the Hülser Berg opens its gates!

On May 2, 2025, the restored rock garden on Hülser Berg in Krefeld was ceremoniously opened. This natural monument that goes back to the initiative of the local researcher Albert Steeger was originally built 100 years ago. The restoration, which was carried out in 2023 on behalf of the GEOPARK RUHR ARENT Financial support from the Rhineland Landscape Association (LVR).

The old park was in a strongly overgrown state, but due to the extensive restoration work it was now able to shine in new splendor. The municipal company Krefeld will take over the long -term maintenance of the rock garden and thus ensures that the newly lived area is preserved. Stone blocks that come from Albert Steeger's original park are exhibited. Many of these stones were lost over time, so that the restoration also had the goal of reuniting this valuable collection.

Insight into the earth history inheritance

The rock blocks in the garden come from a gravel pit of the Cartanjen company, which was active until the 1940s. The stones on display offer visitors a fascinating overview of volcanic rocks to sandstones to quartzites from different earth age. The Scandinavian slope and drift blocks from the catchment area of the Rhine, which illustrate the geological peculiarities of the region, are particularly worth mentioning.

When restoration, the focus was on cleaning, securing and arranging the rock blocks on a sand bed. This arrangement was surrounded by dwarf bushes and heath of heath, which is reminiscent of the clipping of the ice age and gives an impression of the original heath landscape of the Hülser Berg. This mountain, with a height of 63 meters, represents the highest natural survey in Krefeld and is part of the city's largest nature reserve.
