New Sportpark Sprödental: Krefeld plans multifunctionality for everyone!

In Krefeld, the planning of a new sports park is intensively working. The planned “Sportpark Sprödental” is to become a modern and versatile sports center, which is primarily intended to benefit the Krefeld Ravens (football) and Anadolu Türkspor Krefeld (football). Schools are also intended as user groups. The original plans were abandoned in January 2024 due to planning hurdles, since the city cannot devote any additional areas for sports facilities. The area where the sports park is to be created is currently defined in the land use plan as a "Rainwater disposal system", with an underground rainwater retention basin in the general drainage plan. This makes the implementation of the ambitious plans considerably more difficult. According to WZ , the new proposal on January 28 will be advised before the Council is scheduled to vote on the project at the end of February.

The center of the planning is two large-scale artificial turf. One of them will have the standard dimensions for football and American football, while the second is planned for the training company of the American Football team and for competitive games in football. In addition, tourways, short-range railways, a long and triple jumping facility, as well as a high jump and training areas for javelin throw and shot put are to be installed. Floodlight systems for both large playing fields are also planned.

A new building should offer central functions, including a clubhouse, changing rooms, sanitary facilities, offices and storage areas as well as an apartment for the square. The initiative for the Sportpark Sprödental is part of the comprehensive sports development plan Krefeld 2032. The existing sports field currently includes an ash area, a lawn, a locker building and the house of the placeline. The focus sports are athletics, American football and football. An investment of five million euros is also promised for multifunctional small play fields and a new functional building. An essential part of the master plan is the inclusion of the different user groups. After a first online meeting in December 2020 with over 30 participants, which shows a broad citizen participation, discussions about various planning variants took place. This is to develop a joint planning design.

Krefeld expects exciting developments around the Sportpark Sprödental in the coming months. The first important step will be the advice in the sports committee, followed by a final decision by the Council. The city tries to take into account the needs of users as best as possible and at the same time work on the challenges of space availability. The plans are therefore both an expression of the city's sporting engagement and a sign of how important the development of sports infrastructure is for the community.
