Shocking incidents at schools: Keeping the perpetrator at large!

In November 2022, several worrying cases of sexual attacks on young girls were reported in Mönchengladbach and Krefeld. These acts occurred partly on school premises and aroused great concern among the population. A 26-year-old man has been on trial in Krefeld since April 25, 2023 because he is accused of severe children's sexual abuse. The attacks took place at two primary schools in the districts of Linn and Uerdingen, where the perpetrator gained access to the toilets of the schools to abuse the children, as [WDR] reports.

The schools immediately reacted to the incidents and informed the police, who were able to arrest the suspects within a short time. The man is a criminal record, but not because of a similar crime. The teachers at the schools concerned have taken additional security measures, including an increased supervision and the rule that children can only visit the toilets in pairs.

Investigations in Mönchengladbach

In parallel to the incidents in Krefeld, the authorities received reports on sexual assault on students in Mönchengladbach. On November 15, 2022, a stranger is said to have bothered a twelve -year -old in Rheindahlen. The perpetrator impressed the girl when she was in a toilet on Geusenstrasse. The police published a description of the unknown, but could not clarify his identity. Another incident occurred on November 26, when another twelve -year -old was inappropriately touched by a stranger on Hilderather Strasse. This perpetrator also remained undetected.

The investigation into the incidents in Mönchengladbach was hired by the public prosecutor after all approaches were exhausted. The police made it clear that there was no connection between the attacks in Krefeld and the incidents in Mönchengladbach.

measures to increase security

In view of the worrying incidents, the authorities in North Rhine-Westphalia took various security measures. NRW Minister of School Dorothee Feller commented and wished the affected children a quick recovery. Interior Minister Herbert Reul described the incidents as frightening and announced that they think about technical aids such as video surveillance for deterrence without transforming the schools into prisons.

The Union Education and Science NRW, represented by Ayla Celik, recommends measures to be safety that are easy to implement, such as access to toilets in groups of two children. The Conference of Ministers of Education also reacted and adopted a new guide for "child protection at school". This guide is intended to support schools to develop effective protection concepts against sexual violence, as described on [KMK].

In recent years, KMK has dealt intensively with violence prevention and protection against sexual violence. The guidelines are intended to help schools find low -threshold access to create their own protection concepts and offers practical materials for structuring processes. The aim is to better protect children and adolescents from violence, which is also anchored in international convention such as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

at a time when awareness of the risks of sexual violence in schools grows, it is crucial that both political decision -makers and educational institutions take measures to ensure the safety of children.
