North Rhine-Westphalia relies on a fast federal building: new barracks in Unna!

North Rhine-Westphalia significantly increases the construction volume for military projects. In 2022, the total construction volume grew by almost 40 million euros to 222 million euros. Another volume of around 183 million euros is planned for 2023. These investments are part of a comprehensive plan that in 2024 a doubling of the construction volume to 267 million euros and even an increase to 326 million euros by 2027. Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst emphasizes the central role of North Rhine-Westphalia for the Bundeswehr and the need to raise the military infrastructure to a modern level to ensure the operational readiness of the soldiers.

A crucial element of this initiative is the creation of a special task force for the in -depth federal building, which under the direction of finance minister Dr. Marcus Optendrenk is. This task force aims to shorten decision -making channels and to intensify the planning for military construction projects. The building authorities of the federal states, not the federal government, are responsible for the construction of the Bundeswehr. In North Rhine-Westphalia, the building management is headed by the Oberfinanzdirektion (OFD NRW) and the construction and property operation (BLB NRW). 22 additional positions have already been created here, with another 65 new jobs for 2023.

serial building in response to the need

One of the most important construction projects is currently taking place in the Glückauf-Kaserne in Unna. Here, eight new accommodation buildings are being built for a total of around 800 soldiers who are built in serial construction. This construction makes it significantly reduced to the planning and implementation time. By 2028, the federal building sales of the federal government in North Rhine-Westphalia are to increase from over 230 million euros to around 640 million euros. At the same time, it is predicted that military investments will increase annually from over 140 million euros to almost 400 million euros.

The serial construction is also used for another 400 accommodations in a modular construction in the locations of Augustdorf and Minden. The goal is to create reasonable living conditions for the soldiers as soon as possible. In the Glückauf barracks, two buildings of the planned 624 new accommodation rooms have already been completed. Colonel Siegfried Josef Otto emphasizes the strategic importance of these barracks, which lies at important traffic hubs and thus supports the mobility of the troops.

modernization and renovation of infrastructure

The modernization of the medical supply center and the renovation of the technical and training area of the barracks is also on the agenda. Minister Optendrenk expresses his thanks and respect for the stationed soldiers and confirms the country's commitment to improve the conditions for the troops. He points out that quick medium inflows from Berlin are of extreme importance in order to be able to implement the plans efficiently and fully.

North Rhine-Westphalia actively addresses the challenge to increase military construction work and relies on optimized planning and processes. With the “Future Bundesbau NRW” project, the country has already set the course for a rapid implementation of the construction projects, which is considered decisive for the attractiveness and efficiency of the military locations by those responsible.

The renewal of the Federal Building Agreement (BBV NRW) between the state and the federal government is another step to strengthen this partnership. In February 2023, a specialist conference under the direction of Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius took place in order to accelerate military construction projects. The results of this cooperation promise not only an increase in the construction volume, but also a stringent underpinning of military operational capacity in North Rhine-Westphalia.
