Secure the future: MINT projects in Lippe promote young talents!

In North Rhine-Westphalia, ambitious projects for promoting MINT talents (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, technology) are underway. The network "Future through Innovation.NRW" (ZDI.NRW) is a central player. It comprises over 100 laboratories and more than 5,000 partners from science, business, school and politics. The goal is clear: to inspire children and adolescents for MINT subjects in order to counteract the impending shortage of skilled workers in these areas. According to LZ visited Ina Brandes, the Minister of Culture and Science in North Rhine-Westphalia, recently the ZDI center in Paderborn, where funding commitments to six ZDI networks were presented in the Detmold region, including the ZDI Center Lippe.mint.

The project "More Mint in Lippe" is particularly noteworthy, which focuses on reaching pupils in grades five to seven. Here, craft businesses with fewer than 100 employees are to be included in order to improve public relations. Marc Thiel, Managing Director of Lippe Education, emphasizes the urgency of these initiatives in order to counteract the shortage of skilled workers in the MINT area.

lack of specialists in the MINT area

The current MINT early year report 2023, published by the Institute of the German Economy on May 24, shows a serious lack of specialists in the MINT area. Currently, the skilled workers in 36 different MINT vocational categories, as is reported on ZDI-Portal , is reported. Are most affected:

  • energy and electrical apples: 88,600 missing persons
  • machine and vehicle technology: 56,600 missing persons
  • IT professions: 50,600 missing persons
  • MINT expert activities: 141,300 missing persons

A worrying trend shows a decline in the MINT area from 35.1 % in 2015 to 31.7 % in 2023. This development was also discussed in the context of educational inequality, which has intensified and more difficult to get up to education.

Promotion of women in MINT calls

The increase in women in MINT professions, which rose from 13.8 % in 2012 to 16.0 % in 2022, is positive. Nevertheless, North Rhine-Westphalia with 14 % and Rhineland-Palatinate occupies the penultimate place in relation to the proportion of women in these professions. The largest proportion of women can be found in the areas of biology and chemistry as well as in other scientific professions. At the same time, the proportion of women in metal processing remains remarkably low, which shows further social challenges.

The national MINT forums warn of a continuing skilled worker, despite the economic cooling. Recommendations to reduce this gap include the need to start MINT formation in preschool and to promote the visibility of girls and women in MINT professions. Programs for language support and mentoring are also crucial to overcome language barriers and to make it easier for young women to access MINT professions.

The initiatives such as the ZDI.NRW show how important it is to put incentives at a young age and to promote interest in these exciting professions.
