Start of the season for motorcyclists: Police relies on security and prevention!
on Sunday, April 7, 2025, the police in the Märkisches district looked for an exchange with motorcyclists on the occasion of the start of the season. This campaign took place in cooperation with the DRK local association Balve, whereby no speed controls or reviews of vehicles were planned. Police spokesman Marcel Dilling and chief police commissioner in the field of accident prevention were on site and had talks about protective equipment, driving style and safety training. Dilling emphasized that drivers are often the causes of accidents with motorcycles, which underlined the importance of consideration for all road users.
The interest in the event was great. Motorcyclists from different regions, including the Ruhr area and Freiburg, took part. The response from a Harley driver group was particularly positive. In addition to the information event, the DRK-Balve offered first aid exercises, which included topics such as losing weight and the stable side position. In the context of security, the police documented that nine two -wheelers were killed in the Märkisches district last year.
technical controls and speed measurements
In parallel to the event, technical controls and speed measurements took place in the southern district. A total of 2,424 vehicles were recorded, including 203 motorcycles. 157 vehicles received a warning money and 70 were displayed. A motorcyclist exceeded the permissible maximum speed of 70 km/h by driving 122 km/h. Technical checks also showed defects in 12 vehicles, including crazy tires and inadmissible exhaust systems. It was striking a Harley noise measurement, which resulted in 128.7 dB and led to the display of the driver. In order to increase the safety of motorcyclists, the Interior Ministry has presented a five-point plan. This is said to contribute to reducing the number of accidents, which have gained importance since a significant increase in over 40 percent in fatal motorcycle accidents in 2017. In 2017, 101 motorcyclists died from March to October, there were a total of 104.
five-point plan to improve security
- monitoring offensive : focus on racers and noise with the latest technology.
- prevention "ü50" : In particular, that 42% of the deadly crashed motorcyclists are over 50 years old.
- good equipment : free technology check by TÜV Süd at prevention events.
- Offensive public relations work : strengthen awareness through posters and social media.
- Safe traffic area : measures to improve traffic safety such as underrun protection on protection planks.
The ADAC in Baden-Württemberg supports these security measures and offers vouchers for driving safety training. Every year around 5,000 participants are trained nationwide for motorcycle driving safety training. The need for qualified driving training is repeatedly emphasized to minimize the risks for motorcyclists.
Although between 2007 and 2011 the number of deadly crashed motorcyclists could be reduced by more than 10 %, motorcyclists remain one of the most endangered groups in road traffic. Public relations that emphasize light and visibility, as well as the use of daytime running lights, is considered necessary to further improve traffic safety. The German Road Safety Council therefore also recommends regular participation in security training and the use of suitable protective clothing.
