Great Art Night: Mülheim celebrates the Ziegler exhibition!

On February 22, 2025, the exhibition "In the Garden of Art. Klee, Feininger, Nolde" will open in the Kunstmuseum Mülheim an der Ruhr, which will be shown until January 11, 2026. This show is dedicated to the collector couple Karl and Maria Ziegler and their remarkable relationship with art. Under the direction of curator Michael Kuhlemann, works by Emil Nolde, Lyonel Feininger and Paul Klee are presented for the first time in this constellation. Particularly not only to be emphasized that the works shown not only represent individual self -expression, but also have a deeper connection to the biography of the Ziegler couple.

The exhibition takes place on the first floor of the museum, the so -called Beletage, which is equipped with a tiled stove, stucco and decorated wooden doors. Furniture from the 1960s and carefully selected wallpapers create a homely ambience that underlines the intimate atmosphere of the collection. The Ziegler had completed their home in Mülheim an der Ruhr in 1957, within sight of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for coal research, and set it up with works of art that reflected their aesthetic preferences.

focus on emotions and landscapes

The focus of the collection is particularly noteworthy. These works are the result of a passion for collecting, which was more based on aesthetic criteria than on art -historical reviews. Numerous flower still life is reminiscent of the garden, which Maria Ziegler lovingly designed and where the representations of landscapes and gardens play a central role. These images are both individually recognized as part of the exhibition and supplemented by explanatory texts, films and audio information.

The Ziegler was known to rarely comment on their passion for collecting. Nevertheless, the selection of your works reflects the "joy of beautiful". Many of their first acquisitions from the late 1950s show an emotional examination of the underlying topic and present the visual design as a kind of personal reflection.

German Expressionism focuses

The works that are presented come from the time of German Expressionism, a art movement that was created in the early 1900s and which influenced not only painting, but also architecture, film, literature and music. The artists, including Nolde, Feininger and Klee, placed great emphasis on emotions and subjective representations. They searched for new forms of expression that took into account the social and political upheavals of their time.

German Expressionism is known for its intensive coloring and the use of unnatural colors to emphasize feelings. The artists distorted forms and lines to create emotional response and create symbolic representations. The heyday of this movement extended from the 1900s to the 1920s and left a lasting influence on the art world.

The exhibition is supplemented in 2026 by a second part, which focuses on Alexej von Jawlensky, August Macke and Franz Marc's works. This continuation of the retrospective will further deepen the connection between the individual artists and shed light on the development of German Expressionism in the context of the Ziegler collection.

Overall, the exhibition "In the Garden of Art" enables a deep insight into the personal and aesthetic motivations of a collector's couple as well as the significant art flow, which has sustainably shaped modern art.
