Olpe celebrates 35 years of children's hospice work: A look at the challenges!

On February 12, 2025, the German Children's Hospice Association (DKHV) celebrated its 35th anniversary in Olpe as part of the "day of children's hospice work". The event took place in the Haus of Children's Hospice Work in the Olper Trift. A highlight was the talks, in which Regina Wagner from the DKHV, Kerstin Dornseifer, a mother of a late child, Roland Penz, head of the Balthasar children's and youth hospice, and Marcel Globisch, board member of the DKHV, and Mayor Peter Weber. Mayor Weber praised the founding families of the DKHV and emphasized the essential role that Olpe plays for child and youth hospice work.

Kerstin Dornseifer spoke clearly about the stress that bureaucracy imposes on the families. Roland Penz emphasized the important terms, support and relief, which are conveyed by child and youth hospice work. In addition, Marcel called globically political measures for improved expert care for young people with a life -shortening illness.

As part of these events, the valuable work of the volunteers were also pointed out. 25 volunteers are currently available who completed a 100-hour qualification course and support 16 families. The accompaniment takes place individually according to the needs of the families in the house of children's hospice work, in Trift 13, Olpe. This accompaniment can take place from the diagnosis and give quality of life for years.

volunteers are not only committed to family accompaniment, but also in public relations. A new training course for volunteers begins in 2025. Interested parties can have non -binding information talks and find out about the work of the DKHV.

The challenge for caring relatives

A central aspect of the discussion was the role of nursing parents, mostly mothers who often take on immense responsibility without the associated effort being adequately approved. Kerstin Dornseifer also emphasized the importance of accompaniment after the death of a child who is of crucial importance for many families.

Sebastian Vollmer's extraordinary “Charity Challenge” was another facet of the event. With his run, he collected a total of 3500 euros for the outpatient children's and youth hospice service Olpe.

Overall, the German Children's Hospice Association proves to be an essential institution even after 35 years, which accompanies and supports families with seriously ill children.
