Safe children on the net: Parents' evening in Olpe for digital war fighting!

On April 23, 2025, a parents' evening on the topic of "dangers on the Internet and how they can protect their children" takes place in Olpe. This event is organized by the crime prevention advice center and offers an important platform to discuss the protection of children in digital space. Chief Criminal Investigation Commissioner Simone Klewes will be present as an expert and will give valuable advice on handling dangers on the net. Topics such as hate speech, cyberbullying and cybergrooming are in focus.

A minimum number of 20 people is required, while a maximum of 35 parents can take part. Registration will be made by email to simone.klewes@polizei.nrw.de by April 17 at the latest. Participation in the event is free of charge, which makes it particularly accessible to everyone interested. The need for such events is underpinned by current developments in the field of digital violence.

Current challenges through digital violence

On June 13, 2024, an EU directive came into force to combat violence against women and domestic violence. In this context, digital violence, which is increasingly reinforced by information and communication technologies, is considered a serious problem. It is increasingly recognized that the distinction between analog and digital violence is inadequate, because many affected people experience both forms of violence, often by the same perpetrators.

digital violence can occur in numerous forms, including HATE Speech, cyberbullying and cyber grooming. The gender-specific component of digital violence, which often assumes (ex) partners or unrequited admirers, arouses a special concern. Cyberstalking, the unauthorized recovery of a person, also plays an important role here. These deeds are not only virtual, but also have real consequences for those affected and can have far -reaching consequences in everyday life.

necessary steps for prevention

The public discussion about digital violence shows that not only the awareness of the problem has to be strengthened, but also legal framework must be improved. The German Lawyers' Association and other initiatives are calling for rethinking and legal changes to combat digital violence more effectively.

It is particularly worrying that many affected digital violence often do not recognize as such, which makes support difficult. Here, events such as the upcoming parents' evening start by teaching education and action strategies to better protect children and adolescents. Digital violence can lead to a withdrawal from the Internet, which is particularly problematic for women with family or professional obligations.
