Senior in Paderborn falls on the brazen fraud!
On Friday, January 17, 2025, an 84-year-old woman from Paderborn was victim of a sophisticated telephone fraud. At 6:25 p.m. she received a call from a supposed police officer whose number was suppressed. The fraudster informed her about alleged burglaries in her neighborhood and urged her to secure money and valuables immediately. Under shock, the senior woman handed over a medium three -digit sum of cash to an unknown man who was waiting at her doorstep and then fled in an unknown direction. The woman affected later realized that she had been cheated and then informed the police about the emergency call. Despite an immediately initiated search in the near area, the perpetrator could not be caught, and the search was unsuccessful.
The police describe the sought as about 1.70 to 1.75 meters tall, slim and completely dressed in black. On the same evening, other citizens reported similar fraud calls, but fortunately they immediately put on them, which means that they escaped possible damage. The police urgently warns against getting involved in such talks and advising not disclosing personal data and information about assets. Those affected should simply put on a suspect and contact relatives via known numbers. Older people in particular should be informed about these fraud stitches.
The method of fraudsters
The current incident is part of a major problem in which criminals specifically address senior citizens to get their assets. They often use emotional manipulation by pretending for emergency sites or appearing as relatives. Older people are more affected in many fields of crime than younger generations, as well as BMFSFJ
The Paderborn police in 2023 "shocked on the phone? On the phone!" launched to draw attention to these fraud stitches. As part of this initiative, citizens are to be informed and sensitized about the dangers. Further information and information flyers are available on the website of the Paderborn
Additional fraud attempts also take place via messenger services with fake new telephone numbers, which also pose a high risk. The police appeal to all citizens to draw the attention of such tricks, especially older relatives and to support them in the user management of communication media. Caution remains the top priority, especially for the vulnerable group of older people.
