University of Paderborn: model for equality in science!

On March 6, 2025, the University of Paderborn was awarded for its exemplary equality concept in the second round of the nationwide professor program. This is an important step towards equality at universities in Germany, since the university is one of the twelve universities, which were awarded the predicate "equality strong university", as Uni-paderborn.de reports .

The professor program, which has existed since 2008, has set itself the goal of promoting equality between women and men in science. With a total budget of 320 million euros over eight years, the program supports the increase in the number of professors in the direction of parity and the promotion of (young) scientists and artists. So far, over 850 professorships have been promoted, which underlines the objective of counteracting the so -called "Leaky Pipeline", in which female talents are often lost in the science system after the doctorate. Currently, the proportion of women from doctoral students is 46%, but sinks to 28% in the professorship, such as bmbf.de.

The equality concept of the University of Paderborn

The equality concept of the University of Paderborn focuses on the visibility of scientists and includes gender -sensitive appeal management and gender -friendly career development. With a recent Professor interior of 40.5 percent, the university relies on measures that prevent discrimination due to gender and promote compatibility of professional and private life. For the fourth time, the university took part in the professor program, which illustrates the sustainable obligation to equality in the university landscape.

Participation in the program requires a detailed submission of equality concepts that are evaluated externally by a specialist jury. Of the 56 universities who have received positive reviews, applications for start-up financing for the initial appointment of women can be made for permanent W2 or W3 professorships by September 30, 2026. In addition, excellent universities have the opportunity to make an application for a job for a young scientist who should lead to an indefinite professorship.

The relevance of the professor program

The program that will run in three special rounds of eight years requires a uniform equality concept from all universities. The first three program phases were consistently able to show positive evaluations, with detectable structural developments in equality. Applications for the funding measures are permitted by September 30, 2025. In the first selection round of the current professor program, 92 universities successfully competed with each other, and 22 were recognized for their particularly effective equality concepts.

In the eleventh edition of the university ranking according to equality aspects, published by Center of Excellence Women and Science (CEWS) it becomes clear that the need for quality assurance in equality at universities is still high. This ranking serves to visualize and the continuous comparison of developments in the equality of women and men.
