15 million euros for Gelsenkirchen: The city is planning large redesign!
On May 4, 2025, the redesign of the cultural port in Gelsenkirchen will be promoted in order to meet the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) 2027. The planning of these extensive measures comes from the WBP landscape architects, which have designed a concept that is intended to upgrade Gelsenkirchen as the location of the IGA. The city is granted a grant of 15 million euros from the urban development program of the NRW state government, which represents the largest funding amount in North Rhine-Westphalia. This financial support serves the "Future Partnership Gelsenkirchen" and is intended to help reduce housing overhangs and problem properties.
The IGA 2027 not only provides extensive changes in Gelsenkirchen. Recklinghausen also benefits from the urban development funding and receives around 14.7 million euros, which are used for several projects such as the production of the "Heidese Lake" and the redesign of the schoolyard of the Hillerheide primary school. Five IGA projects are supported as part of these subsidies with a total of 12.9 million euros. In addition, numerous other cities such as Bochum, Bottrop, Duisburg and Essen are included in the funding program, which supports a total of 133 projects this year with around 302 million euros. The financing is made up of a share of EUR 150.3 million of the state government and around 149.2 million euros in the federal government.
sustainable developments and leisure projects
The Nordsternpark in Gelsenkirchen, which was created on a former colliery site and was already part of the Federal Garden Show in 1997, should be emphasized. In the context of the IGA 2027, the park is further developed, in particular the Emscher island, which is to be designed as a "future island". This concept is to create a model project for climate change and the sustainable use of conversion areas. The planned facilities include places of coming together and activity-promoting encounters as well as a barrier-free mobility axis and cross-generational game and sports offers.Another exciting project is the development of the carbon bunker ensemble to the Greentower. These redesign measures in the Nordsternpark should also benefit the adjacent city quarters such as Schalke-Nord in the long term by increasing the quality of life and offering innovative leisure opportunities.
Green and culture protection in Dortmund
In Dortmund, the Hansa coking plant is also comprehensively redesigned as part of the IGA 2027. The coking park planned there will help increase the quality of living and life. Thomas Westphal, the mayor of Dortmund, announced the construction of a new green area, which will be accessible to the public after the IGA. The planned paths will provide pedestrians and cyclists access from the Huckarde district to the Emscher, whereby a new bridge project is being realized.
The concept of the "cloud", a walkable game and experience sculpture made of steel, is particularly innovative. This will enrich the park and offer visitors interactive experiences. The redesign of the Hansa coking plant - a historically worth protecting building since 1997 - also provides for conversion for gastronomy and events. The aim is to develop the location economically in the long term.
Overall, the IGA 2027 will serve as an important project for urban renewal and development, which not only increases the quality of life, but should also make the history and culture of the region tangible. Preparations for these extensive measures are already in full swing in order to meet the expectations of visitors and to change the cities in the Ruhr area sustainably. According to Rundschau Duisburg this is strengthened by comprehensive financial support and innovative concepts, as they are also ruhr area.de and Bra.nrw.de Report
