On Wednesday afternoon, January 2, 2025, there was a serious accident on Recklinghauser Straße in Castrop-Rauxel at 4:20 p.m. An 80-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured when an 86-year-old driver, also made of Castrop-Rauxel, drove towards B235.
The incident occurred when the pedestrian, together with her dog, wanted to cross the street at the intersection to Borghagener Strasse. The driver initially drove against the dog leash, causing the elderly woman to be torn and fell. At the time of the accident, the traffic light system at the intersection was out of operation.
health care for the injured
The seriously injured pedestrian was immediately taken to a hospital with an ambulance where she is medical care.
In a more general context, the German Road Safety Council (DVR) reported on traffic accident statistics 2023. The figures show that 2,839 people in Germany died in traffic accidents, which corresponds to an increase of 1.8 % compared to the previous year. The number of injuries also rose to 366,557 people. Pedestrians whose number of killed and injured has increased in the past three years are particularly affected.
Manfred Wirsch, President of the DVR, demanded increased consideration of pedestrian security in transport policy. The Federal Government is working on a foot traffic strategy and is planning the amendment to the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO), which, among other things, enables municipalities to arrange zebra crossings without evidence of a special risk. In addition, speed 30 are to be introduced at playgrounds and heavily frequented school routes to better protect children.
