Town hall tower in Remscheid: Height climbers fight against impending collapse!

On Wednesday morning, height climbers roped down on the facade of the town hall tower in Remscheid to examine acute damage. During this inspection, which Kevin Hotton was guided, it turned out that natural slate stones had fallen from the tower. This dangerous situation was cordoned off the main entrance of the town hall with a flutter tape to ensure the security of the citizens. The Hotton Climbing company, which was founded in 2009 and specializes in altitude work, carried out the necessary repair work.

The team removed the shaky slate stones, but plans to return to replace the damaged parts professionally and to re -attach. In this context, Kevin Hotton noted that respectful use of the task is important, while fear is not allowed in such altitude work. These measures are part of the urgent need to get the town hall tower in a better condition.

urgent renovation measures

The urgency of a complete renovation of the town hall is not only evident in the progressive damage of the tower. After destruction during the Second World War, the tower was restored in the 1960s, but considerable damage has now been visible. Moisture penetrates inside the tower, which is a serious problem. In addition, the electrics of the town hall must be renewed after decades.

A large -scale 40 million euro project for an extension and a new fire station is already being planned. To implement this project, a total entrepreneur is sought by Europe -wide tender. In the meantime, visitors to the town hall have to use the ancillary entrances, while a temporary solution with a scaffolding construction is being considered for the main entrance.

energetic renovation of the windows

In parallel to the work at the town hall tower, there are already funded measures for the energetic renovation of the town hall windows, which were provided as part of the economic stimulus package II. When the windows were stocked, 52 different window types were documented and sorted. This work was done in two construction phases, with the first from 2010 to 2011 and the second in 2012.

Both restorative and energetic reproductions are carried out in the renovation. This affects both the construction -time windows that are preserved, as well as the exchange and the renewal of non -construction. Affected street facades are Hochstraße, Rathausstraße, Theodor-Heuss-Platz and Konrad-Adenauer-Straße. During the renovation work, the facades were also revised stone, and the wrought -iron window grids were given a new coating. The town hall itself was built between 1902 and 1906 and has had many challenges since then.

The state of the town hall tower and the planned renovations illustrate the need to ensure that the historical substance and the functionality of the town hall for the future illustrate the need for more comprehensive work. The progress of the measures is crucial for the preservation of a central building of the city of Remscheid.
