Globus closes branches: Kaufland takes over in NRW!

On January 3, 2025, Globus announced that several of his branches will close in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). The locations in Wesel, Bedburg, Essen and Chemnitz are affected. The Globus location in Wesel will be closed on January 31, 2025, while the branch in Bedburg as early as January 4, 2025. The closures for the shops in Essen and Chemnitz are planned in mid -2025, but there are still exact dates.

The closed locations are taken over by Kaufland, which was previously mentioned in industry circles as a potential buyer. This measure takes place as part of the company's financial adjustment. Globus had previously taken over some locations of the insolvent shop chain Real, but calculated because the customer acceptance of the sales concept was lower than expected. Globus currently operates over 50 locations in Germany and decided to sell five branches to Kaufland.

Details on the sales movement

The sale includes the branches in Bedburg, Chemnitz, Essen, Neubrandenburg and Wesel. It was also emphasized that all jobs should be preserved, which was guaranteed by the new operator. The affected branches cannot be continued economically, which is why the closure is essential. Since the takeover of the real locations, the number of globe market halls has increased from 49 to 65, with up to 20 million euros invested in their renovation. Nevertheless, the economic developments remained behind the expectations.

Globus SB-Warenhaus was founded in St. Wendel, Saarland in 1828 and follows an assortment that includes food, household goods, drugstore articles, electronics and textiles. Until the closure, customers still have the option of shopping at Globus. The opening of the converted Kaufland locations is expected to take place in the first half of 2025, although it remains unclear how long this conversion will take.
