Globus closes several branches: Kaufland takes over locations in NRW!
globus has announced the closure of several branches in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). The locations in Wesel, Bedburg, Essen and Chemnitz are affected. The closure of the Globus location in Wesel is planned for January 31, 2025, while the branch in Bedburg will be closed on January 4, 2025. The closure of the locations in Essen and Chemnitz is planned for mid -2025, but precise data is not yet known.
The affected branches are handed over to Kaufland in the course of a sale. This step is part of a financial cleanup, since Globus had previously taken over some locations of the former real chain and calculated. Globus, a family -run company, offers a full range of food as well as gastronomy, bakery and butcher shop in its markets and operates over 50 locations in Germany.
Details of the branch sales and the effects
The sale comprises five branches to Kaufland, including in addition to Bedburg, Chemnitz, Essen and Wesel, Neubrandenburg. Globus currently operates a total of 65 branches in Germany. However, the sale must still be approved by the Federal Cartel Office. According to the new operator, all jobs should be retained in the affected branches.
The reason for the sale lies in the low than expected customer acceptance of the Globus sales concept. These locations cannot be operated economically. As early as April 2021, Globus took over some houses from the insolvent department store chain Real and invested up to 20 million euros in the renovation of these locations. In June 2024, the "Food Newspaper" reported plans to sell up to seven Globus markets, which has now further concretized with the new developments.
