Athletes of the year: Gala in Bergisch Gladbach inspires with stars!

On April 9, 2025, a festive evening of the district sports association took place in the Bergischer Löwe in Bergisch Gladbach, which honored the best athletes, athletes and teams in 2024. Leaded by ARD sports moderator Tom Bartels, the event was visited by numerous guests of honor, including mayor and vice mayor from various municipalities, as well as Herbert Watterott, a legend of the Tour de France moderation. District Administrator Stephan Santelmann emphasized in his speech the increasing importance of sport for the region.

The main award winners of the evening were particularly celebrated: Fabian Roth from TV Refrath in badminton and the para athlete Jule Roß, who drew attention to themselves with outstanding achievements. In addition, the hockey players of the THC Rot-Weiß Bergisch Gladbach were awarded. The female relay of TV Herkenrath secured third place. Yuri Heimann, the chairman of the district sports association, emphasized the valuable role of the youth workers in sport in his speech.

an evening full of emotions and honors

The laudators presented lovingly designed steles to the winners, accompanied by the audience's loud applause. The dance performance of the "Dancin Midis" caused enthusiasm in the hall, whereby the guests felt well entertained. The event was also enriched by the Sportophonics Jingle Band and various show performances.

Marcel Kreutz (SPD) and Martin Lucke (CDU) proudly performed the names of the athletes of the year. Hermann Steveker, managing director of the newspapers, reported over 3000 online votes that even came from Australia and Spain. This illustrates the great interest and support for the athletes of the region.

importance of volunteering

Another highlight of the evening was the speech by Friedhelm Julius Beucher, President of the German Disabled Sports Association, who spoke about the upcoming games in Paris and expressed the desire to bring Olympia to Germany in 2036. Caroline Bosbach (CDU) emphasized the importance of civic engagement in Germany, in which 30 million volunteers are active.

A very special occasion is imminent for the sports community: On April 13, 2024, the "Voluntary Award in Sport" will be awarded for the first time. This award is presented in the Dippoldiswalde sports park and replaces the former award ceremony at Burgk Castle in Freital. Six award winners from the member associations of the district sports association are honored for their voluntary work and receive two free tickets for the gala, which promises a colorful program with buffet, dance and tombola.

The application for the 2023 volunteer award is possible until November 30, 2023. Clubs can submit their proposal for the award that stands for the appreciation of selfless commitment in sport.

Uli Heimann said goodbye to the guests with a view of the next gala in the coming year. The celebrations of the district sports association impressively show how much sport strengthens and connects the community.
