Bergischer Bicycle Bus starts the season: cycling fun for everyone!

The Bergisches Bahnbus starts its eighth season and connects the municipality of Opladen with the Oberbergische City of Marienheide from May 1, 2025. This range of transport is particularly attractive for cyclists who want to take a bike tour in the hills east of the Rhine Valley without overcoming large meters of altitude. According to KStA.de , the trips are offered until October 5, on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

The departure times in Opladen are at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Return trips from Marienheide take place at 11.15 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 4.15 p.m. The bicycle bus is equipped with a special trailer that offers space for 16 bicycles. In addition, four bicycles can be transported on the bus. This also enables passengers without their own bikes to use the amenities of the bike paths, as rental bikes from Nextbike are available in the region at 15 stations.

bicycle culture and tourism

The connection of the Bergisches Bahn buss runs along the Balkan route Panorama cycle path and the Bergisches Panorama cycle path, which are part of a route network between the Rhine and Sieg over 300 km long. These routes use a large number of former railway lines in the Rheinisch-Bergischen and in the Oberberg district, which makes the region particularly bike-friendly. The use of the bicycle bus has stabilized after the Corona pandemic. On average, 47 passengers with 24 bikes use the bus, whereby the numbers of transport tend to be higher on public holidays than on Saturdays.

regional connection and infrastructure

The bus station in Opladen offers a direct connection to regional train traffic, which makes it an important hub for day tourists from Bonn, Cologne, Düsseldorf and the Wuppertal-Solingen-Remscheid from Bergisches. There is also a growing number of hiking tourists who come from the Netherlands.

The infrastructure in the region is well developed and is further funded by the national cycling plan (NRVP 3.0). Politics aim to sensitize the cities and municipalities to bike tourism. Not only the cycle paths, but also the entire tourist infrastructure are promoted. These efforts help to strengthen rural and structurally weak regions economically and to increase the quality of life.

Overall, the Bergisches Bahnbus is very popular and is highlighted as a unique selling point in local public transport. With barrier -free access and the possibility of easily transporting bikes, the bus promotes bike tourism in the region.
