Bakery Dördelmann closes branch in Ahlen: A sad farewell!
The Dördelmann bakery has decided to close its branch in Ahlen on February 1, 2025. This announcement was distributed on Thursday morning via the company's Facebook channel. The affected branch is located on Dolberger Straße, directly opposite the Berlin Park and the leisure pool. It represents the only branch of the hammer company in this city.
The decision to close was described by the managing director Philipp Dördelmann as "not easy". The company operates a total of eleven branches in Hamm and four others in the area. It is emphasized that the closure of the Ahlen branch will have no effect on the work of the other locations. At the same time, the branch on the village pond on Soester Straße in Ostwennemar is renovated for two weeks to improve the service there.
sales problems and loss of customer
The closure in Ahlen is not the first time that Dördelmann has difficulties in relation to his locations. On December 31, 2024, the branch on Weststrasse was also closed after the redesign into a meeting zone had led to a noticeable loss of customer. Managing Director Dördelmann pointed out that sales were no longer sufficient to keep the branch profitably. This was completely closed during the construction phase in summer 2018, which also led to a reorientation of customers.
The relocation of parking and the loss of parking spaces have also harmed sales. These challenges are exemplary for many retailers in the region who have to fight with similar problems. Four employees were affected by the closure on Weststrasse, but who are to continue to find employment in other branches of the company.
The bakery trade in change
The problems with which Dördelmann is confronted reflect a wider trend within the baker's trade. According to the central association of the German bakery trade, sales in the industry rose to 14.89 billion euros in 2021, but there was also a decline in 5.4 percent to around 240,800 employees. This is a worrying trend, especially since the number of bakery companies has dropped by 2.1 percent to 9,965.
The concern for declining apprenticeship numbers could lead to a greater shortage of skilled workers. In this context, the young campaign "Back your future" has been launched to support members in the recruitment of new trainees. In view of increasing raw material prices and inflation, consumers unsettle, it remains to be seen how the market will develop.
The closure of the Dördelmann branch in Ahlen is therefore not just an isolated case, but part of a complex image that affects many bakery in the region and beyond.
