The focus on climate change: Sven Plöger warns of dramatic consequences!

On April 6, 2025, the graduate meteorologist and TV presenter Sven Plöger gave an impressive keynote speech at the Rhein-Waal (HSRW) University of Applied Sciences (of course new business ". This lecture was organized by the entrepreneur Forum Niederrhein, the HSRW support association and the "Transregint" university project. The lecture hall in the Audimax was fully booked with around 500 listeners, which underlined the great interest in climate protection.

Plöger opened his speech with the significant statement that a positive belief in the victory of the difficulties of climate change was of central importance. He addressed the current drought and warned of the serious effects that climate change can have on the environment and living conditions of people. It is necessary to implement sustainable economic practices in order to secure prosperity in the long term.

criticism of humanity

plöger criticized humanity for the constant destruction of the environment, despite the technological progress. He made it clear that the problem of climate change was not due to a lack of knowledge, but because of a lack of action. The meteorologist referred to historical warnings, especially the science journalist Hoimar of Ditfurth, who had already pointed out the dangers of climate change in 1978. Current studies show that the limit values of global warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius have already been exceeded.

In the context of his lecture, Plöger explained that climate change used to be slower earlier, and he presented impressive pictures that document the changes in the Alps for over 11,000 years. He warned of the dramatic consequences of an increase in temperature by three to four degrees until the end of the century. In particular, the changed storm situations and the change in the jet stream contributed to the drama of the situation.

causes and solutions

Plöger showed pictures that illustrate the effects of the melting arctic ice and the warming of the permafrost, and emphasized that a profound transformation within society was inevitable. Here he CITE from industrialization and recalled the possibilities that modern technologies offer. Among other things, he called hydrogen research and solar energy as promising developments to combat climate change.

A particularly remarkable example of successful climate protection was the work of agricultural scientist Toni Rinaudo in Ethiopia, which Plöger emphasized as positive impulse. At the end of his lecture, he called on the joint effort and conveyed the motto "We Together", which motivated the audience. The lecture found a crowning glory with long applause from the spectators.

In a larger context, the "Agenda 2030 for sustainable development", which was launched in the UN General Assembly in 2015, speaks of the need to take measures to improve living conditions on the planet. This agenda applies to developing countries, emerging countries and industrialized countries alike and demands a joint effort to achieve the 17 sustainability goals, which include global challenges such as combating poverty and measures for climate protection.

In order to counter the challenges of climate change, the cornerstones of the agenda are of central importance: business, society and the environment. These principles form the basis for our future measures and decisions.
