Car fire in Mannheim: Technical defect leads to total damage!

In the early dawn of March 15, 2025, a vehicle fire occurred in Mannheim, which was reported on Seckenheimer Strasse at 4 a.m. A Peugeot, which was previously used and turned off, caught fire in the cab/engine compartment. The fire brigade was quickly on site and was able to successfully control the fire. Fortunately, no people were harmed because two occupants could leave the vehicle unscathed. Nevertheless, the fire on the car caused a total economic damage.

No further vehicles or adjacent buildings were damaged by the fire. However, the expired operating materials led to the involvement of a specialist company for street cleaning and a towing company. For about 20 minutes, the traffic from Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH (RNV) had to be stopped in order to be able to carry out the extinguishing work and the subsequent cleanup. The suspected cause of the fire is a technical defect on the vehicle.

vehicle fires in Berlin

In Kreuzberg, a vehicle owner alerted the police at 3 a.m. after his cell phone signaled a burglar report. When they arrived, the emergency services found three burning vehicles, which were badly damaged. A total of six vehicles were affected by the fires at night, including other cars that were affected on the paint. In Alt-Hohenschönhausen, residents became aware of a vehicle fire at 1.30 a.m., whereby the affected vehicle was completely destroyed and a car next to it was significantly damaged.

The statistics of the vehicle fires

It should be noted that a total of 14,200 comprehensive cars went into flames in Germany in 2023. This number includes both combustion and electric vehicles. The car insurers recorded over 100 million euros in damage payments due to vehicle fires, which shows how costly incidents are for the insurance industry. The average costs per vehicle fire amount to 7,100 euros.

It is interesting to notice that electric cars statistically have no higher risk of fire than their burning counterparts. Vehicle fires often arise from arson, especially during festive occasions such as New Year's Eve. Problems with the battery, especially thermal Runaway, are one main cause of fires for electric vehicles. In some cases, external causes such as vandalism or accidents can lead to the outbreak of a fire.

Fire fighting in electric cars is formed as a complex, especially in closed rooms such as underground garages. The fire brigade has developed special strategies to react to this requirement. For example, burning batteries require long -lasting cooling with water, and in certain cases, special extinguishing containers are used. The fire brigade and emergency services continuously adapt to new technologies in order to effectively deal with the challenges that bring vehicle fires.
