Revolutionary solutions against heavy rain: Company Funke tackles!

The company Funke Kunststoffe GmbH, based on Siegenbeckstraße in Uentrop, Hamm, plays a central role in rainwater management in Germany. With a clear goal of minimizing the effects of climate change, the company offers innovative products for cleaning, infiltration, drainage and storage of precipitation. The business has been managed by Matthias and Christian Funke since October 2023, with Matthias being responsible for the technical area and Christian for the commercial area.

The challenge that climate change brings with it manifests itself in increasing heavy rain events. These events are not only a threat to the infrastructure, but also for the environment. An example of the problems caused by heavy rain is a filter system at the Ostenallee/Fährstraße/Soester Straße intersection, which was installed in 2011. It cleans precipitation of brake particles, tire abrasion, oils and heavy metals - important steps to environmental protection, which also meet legal requirements for rainwater cleaning.

Innovative products for climate -friendly water management

Another remarkable project is the new building of the clinic for manual therapy in Hamm. Here two "D-RAATTANK 3000-Rigols" and a "KS Bluebox" were installed to store rainwater for tree irrigation during drought. This efficient water management on new areas is crucial in times when extreme weather conditions such as dryness and heat are becoming more and more common.

The company's tree irrigation solutions include special tree irrigation angles, which enable continuous root irrigation. As a result, trees can not only act as a pollutant filter, but also be noise damper and shadow donor, which underlines their importance in urban rooms.

municipal adaptation strategies

The risks that arise from heavy rain events have led to initiatives such as the “Regen // Safe” project of the Federal Environment Office. This aims to support municipalities in adapting to heavy rain events. Model municipalities such as Worms, Lübeck and Bad Liebenwerda rely on various communication instruments, such as neighborhood consultations and district workshops, to strengthen citizens and motivate heavy rain prevention.

Some cities have already implemented adjustments to reduce the consequences of heavy rain. For example, Solingen has initiated integral drainage planning that coordinates sewer network management with property drainage, water management and flood protection. Various new solutions, such as removal and greening measures, were introduced.

In addition, the state company for water management, waste management and soil protection (Lawa) developed a strategy for heavy rain risk management in 2018. This includes both prediction and early warning systems and risk communication for the population. Such measures are decisive because the frequency of short heavy rain events, which often cause most of the damage, has remained constant.

The Funke Kunststoffe GmbH therefore plays an important role in the constant adaptation and improvement of the infrastructure and in promoting sustainable use of water resources. The company shows how technological innovations and environmentally conscious practices can interact in order to counter the challenges of climate change. Information and other developments can be found in various projects and reports that are provided by the responsible institutions such as the Federal Environment Agency.
