decline in pick -up steels in Germany

Despite the frequent incidents of pickpockets in major German cities, new statistics can be observed. In 2021, a total of 72,903 pickpockets were displayed in Germany. This represents a decline compared to previous years in which the number of cases was 83,688 (2020) and 94.106 (2019). The Federal Police notes that the Covid-19-Pandemie has significantly influenced the circumstances and the reduced public life Made pick -up thiefs.

The most common cards are usually during the evening rush hour in public transport, shortly before the shop closes in shops, as well as in the run -up to Christmas or during the end of the season. Despite the decline, pick -up steels are still a frequent form of theft that attracts professional and often internationally acting perpetrators.

challenges in perpetrator identification

A big problem in combating pickpockets is the low information rate, which was only 6.3 percent for 2021. Many thefts are not immediately noticed, which significantly complicates the identification of the perpetrators. The Presseportal informs that the handbag theft in EDEKA is also confronted with these challenges. The police asks the public for help with the capture of the unknown perpetrator.
