Fire disaster in Betzdorf: Cellar apartment completely burned out!

On January 26, 2025, a devastating apartment fire occurred around 1 p.m. in an apartment building on Arrenbrechtstraße in Betzdorf. The Betzdorf police inspection was alerted by the integrated control center in Montabaur. In addition to the police, the surrounding fire departments and the emergency services were also deployed to cope with the location on site.

The emergency services reacted quickly and were able to successfully evacuate all house residents. The fire probably had its starting point in the basement apartment, which burned out completely and is now uninhabitable. The exact cause of the fire is currently unclear, as is the amount of the damage incurred. The investigation was taken over by the crime inspection.

flue gas poisoning as a danger

As a result of the fire, the resident of the basement apartment suffered a smoke toxication and had to be taken to the hospital. This type of poisoning is a common consequence of building border. Studies show that the most common cause of death in the fire is not caused directly by the flames, but by flue gas poisoning. These arise from the inhalation of health -damaging gases that are released when burning different substances.

The chimney sweep had previously observed high corrosion on an oven tube, which indicated an increased risk of flue gas poisoning. The dangerous gases include carbon monoxide, which endangers the oxygen supply in the blood, and cyanide, which can be fatal within minutes. Signs of flue gas poisoning are headaches, dizziness and disorders of consciousness. These symptoms require a quick reaction and often medical treatment.

emergency measures and treatments

Treatment of flue gas poisoning requires quick action. In the event of slight torture, air exchange should be immediately provided. In more severe cases, access is only suitable for trained people under respiratory protection. One of the most important measures is oxygen gift for affected people who show symptoms in fresh air. Hydroxycobalamine can be given as an antidot to reduce the effects of cyanide.

The fire brigade and the emergency services are always prepared for such emergencies and regularly train how to deal with flue gas poisoning. These incidents underline the importance of preventive measures and regular controls of heating systems to minimize such dangers and to ensure the safety of the residents.
