Oberhausen: Over 1,570 oaks threatened by the dangerous processionary spinner!

The city of Oberhausen has initiated measures to combat the oak processionary spinner. The SBO service operations Oberhausen are currently checking the oaks for a possible infestation through the dreaded caterpillars. This procedure takes place on behalf of the city in order to avoid health impairments by the citizens. The infestation has increased dramatically this year, so that over 1,570 trees in the city are affected, which must be treated, as Lokalkompass.de

From April 28, 2025, prophylactic spray campaigns will be carried out in Oberhausen. These have the goal of effectively combating the caterpillars that are known for their harmful properties. The product Foray Es used is based on the biological active ingredient Bacillus Thuringiensis and is specially designed for combating the oak processionary spinner. The sprays are made from the ground before the caterpillars reach the third larval stage, which stops their food intake within a few hours.

comprehensive control approach

In the period from April 28 to May 9, 2025, a total of around 1,100 trees are sprayed. Affected areas in particular are urban avenues, streets, parks, gardens and playgrounds. In total, a lot of around 20 liters of the agent per tree are applied. A special treatment solution is applied to the leaves of the trees. During the spray action, the city was instructed to observe various focuses, such as the Graßhofstraße, Höhenweg and Kirchhellener Straße.

In order to meet the oak processionary spinner in sensitive areas such as city forests and landscape protection areas, the city has developed alternative measures. No chemical sprays are made here; Instead, the manual removal of nests and caterpillars takes place. This shows the city's commitment to protect both the environment and to secure the well -being of the population.

ecological measures

In addition to combating the caterpillars, nesting boxes for titms are installed in these areas. This is intended to help reduce the larval population by natural predators. The number of Meisennist caves is increased from 215 to 230. The locations of the new nesting caves include the Revierpark and Stadtwald Osterfeld as well as the west and north cemetery. The WBO Wirtschaftsbetriebe Oberhausen also has the task of cleaning the nesting boxes on waters with oak processionary pinning infestation.

The cost of the control measures amounts to a total of around 70,000 euros. Citizens are encouraged to report the elements of oak procession spinners under the e-mail address eps@oberhausen.de or by phone at 0208 825-7777. These active steps aim to avoid damage to health and at the same time maintain the biodiversity in the region, as well as the Ordinary online messages determined.
