Historical find in Paderborn: quarry reveals forgotten past!
In the city center of Paderborn, near Marienplatz and Abdinghofstrasse, an old quarry was discovered during the construction preparations for a new administration building. This interesting find happened in the context of archaeological studies that had already started in November 2024. According to Ruhr24 the area is located on the immunity wall of the monastery. Here explorations indicate that the quarry has been an important supplier of building materials for churches and palaces since the 11th century.
The examinations were not without challenges. The area has been strongly shaped by demolition and new construction in the post-war period, which restricted the sensitivity to construction and ground monument preservation. Only a small part of the area remained unaffected, so that archaeological work could take place here. In the past, historical basements under the Heising’s house have already been examined, which had foundation walls and original vaults. These basements are under monument protection and are integrated into the planned new building.
Current excavations and finds
The excavations in Paderborn have removed several rectangular rooms, which were most likely used as basement rooms. Most of these findings are deepened into the rock, which offers a stable building ground for the now no longer existing buildings. Some building corners indicate an earlier dense development that could complement the city archeological image. Archaeologists expect to be able to receive important information about the dating through the findings, such as archaeology-online.de
The excavations carried out so far have progressed to a depth of five meters, whereby the question of the depth of the original quarry remains open. Large -scale disorders caused by post -war buildings make it difficult to classify the artifacts found. Nevertheless, the excavated excavation has been a promising indication of the historical importance of the site.
construction project and outlook
The archaeological studies are continued in accordance with the construction work. Project manager Johanna Jablonski announced that the excavations will be continued after the necessary bored piles. Before the drilling work, an investigation on a fighter by a specialist company will take place. These parallel work on archaeological findings and construction pits should ensure that valuable information is not lost and the construction projects can be promoted quickly.
Overall, the previous finds in the city center of Paderborn show a rich archaeological heritage and arouse interest in the city's building culture for several centuries. Archaeologists hope that future finds will offer even deeper insights into the history and development of the region, while the quarry will be further researched.
