Lilly: Alzey gets a new pharmaceutical work-jobs for the region!

On January 7, 2025, the term “Lilly” was elected as Alser Word in 2024. This decision was made by the readers of the Alzeyer Zeitung and reflects the importance of a groundbreaking project that the region significantly shaped last year. The choice, which is a tradition of the Alzeyer Zeitung, stipulates that readers can submit suggestions for formative terms of the year. The term "Lilly" was able to prevail with a large majority against other suggestions such as "(full) closure" and "diversion", both of which pointed out to traffic problems. Earlier words of the year included "Scheukreisel" (2019), "Swimming Padwers" (2020), and twice "Steinhalle" (2021 and 2022).

The choice shows the strong perception of the settlement of the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly in the region as a central event. Eli Lilly has announced that it would build a new production facility in Alzey. According to information from SWR, the construction of the system should begin in 2024 and be completed by 2027. The investment for this new production facility is estimated at over 2 billion euros ($ 2.5 billion). The production area will be 30 hectares and designed with the goal of a CO2-free design. All roofs of the system are to be equipped with photovoltaic systems.

meaning and jobs

The Mayor of Alzey, Steffen Jung, described the settlement as a "lighthouse" for the region. Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck praised the investment as one of the most important individual economic decisions in Germany. Eli Lilly plans that the new production facility will employ up to 1,000 employees, while around 2,000 workers from the local construction industry are needed for construction. The decision for the Alzey location was mainly due to the good infrastructure and the availability of well -trained specialists.

In addition, the project also expects new jobs to result from suppliers. Eli Lilly already has 1,000 employees in Germany, mainly in Bad Homburg, and also operates a production facility in Fegersheim. Furthermore, Eli Lilly may plan to produce the newly approved weight syringe Zepbound in Alzey, which further upgrades the role of the new production facility.
