Economic summit in Mainz: Merz warns of loss of jobs!

At the IHK annual reception of the economy in Mainz on January 23, 2025, around 2,000 guests came together, which makes this reception the greatest of its kind in Germany. In his speech, CDU chairman and candidate for chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the need to strengthen Germany's economic resilience. In view of the tense industrial report, Merz expressed concerns about the possible loss of jobs in industry that could increasingly migrate to the service sector. He made his concern with an urgent request that Germany must remain a competitive location for industry, especially taking into account the needs of medium -sized businesses.

Prime Minister Alexander Schweitzer from the SPD presented the measures to promote business in Rhineland-Palatinate during the event. A central concern is the reduction in bureaucracy, which is to relieve companies and promote their core business. Schweitzer pointed out that the Rhineland-Palatinate state government has already initiated a comprehensive bureaucracy reduction package with 57 measures in order to create the basics for better economic development. This was made by IHK President Rheinhessen Dr. Markus Walden supports that excessive bureaucracy brakes the economic dynamics.

measures to relieve bureaucracy

As part of the bureaucracy reduction initiative, the state government has reduced about half of the administrative regulations and numerous state regulations since 1990. The measures taken include the reduction of reporting obligations as well as the introduction of digital administrative processes and faster approval procedures.

A concrete example of foreign investments in Rhineland-Palatinate is the company Eli Lilly, which invests billions in the Rheinhessian location Alzey. Schweitzer emphasized the importance of showing active action by the state government and thanked the entrepreneurs and the IHK for their commitment. The goal remains clear: reduction in bureaucracy and the improvement of the framework conditions for the domestic economy.

challenges for industry

In addition, Schwitzer expressed that the energy-intensive industry in Rhineland-Palatinate needs competitive electricity prices to further improve the framework conditions. The red-green federal government had promised measures to cushion the network charges, but it is now missing the necessary majority in the Bundestag.

The need to promote the operating models and to reduce bureaucratic obstacles also confirmed the State Association of Entrepreneurial Associations (LVU). It demands from the new federal government that even more focus is on the concerns of companies in order to secure the German jobs in a changing economic landscape.
